ONGOING RESEARCH: DECODING THE HONEY BEE WAGGLE DANCE
The waggle dance is a complex and precise communication behaviour in which a foraging bee conveys information about the location of a food source to other members of the hive. We’re applying machine learning AI to decode the honey bee waggle dance and count bee foraging frequency and locations. This will connect with our pollen DNA analysis work.
HOW HONEY BEE WAGGLE DANCES CHANGE WITH THE SEASONS
This heat map shows waggle dance frequency from a Sussex University study. Red represents close forage, blue means bees travel further.
In summer, honey bees travel less for forage due to blooming, but this data shows Spring to be equally abundant. The data highlights the role of habitat and location in bee resources, emphasising the importance of local bees in local habitats.
